U2 performs a medley of their previous and current singles at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. The band stops before Bono sings 'Love, lift me up out of these blues', and switches gears into 'Stuck In a Moment.' After the performance, MTV presents U2 with its 'Video Vanguard' award. Bono speaks briefly and brings on the remaining members of The Ramones, who are also given an MTV video award before the show, which is running well over time, moves on to the next segment.

U2 perform live in London at 2:20 am for the 'America: A Tribute to Heroes' telethon organized to raise money for victims of the U.S. terrorist attacks ten days ago. Bono sings the first verse of 'Peace on Earth,' changing the lyrics to 'There's never gonna be Peace on Earth.' They're joined by Dave Stewart on guitar and three backup singers, including Natalie Imbruglia and Edge's better half, Morleigh Steinberg.

U2 performed for the first time on 'The Late Show with David Letterman.' The program bends its rules (which typically limit musical guests to one song of 5-minutes or less) and U2 plays two songs. After the performance, Bono sits down for a brief chat with David Letterman.

U2 performs at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans. Bono walks through the crowd to take the stage as Beautiful Day begins. A larger version of the heart is used for the stage, surrounded by people on the field and in the heart. As MLK starts a screen rises from the back of the stage, which scrolls the names of the people lost in the World Trade Center disaster, fire and police departments, on the flights, and in the buildings themselves. The scrolling continues through most of Streets.

Beat On The Brat

Exact date of this performance is unknown. U2 wins an award for Best Live Act at the NME Carling Awards in London, and part of their videotaped acceptance is a live performance of The Ramones' 'Beat On The Brat.' Adam is not in attendance, so bass tech Stuart Morgan plays behind a cardboard cutout of Adam. The NME Carling Awards are known as the 'Brats'.

Walk On / Hallelujah

Breaking Grammy tradition, U2 doesn't perform the song nominated for Song of the Year, and instead opens the 3.5 hour broadcast with 'Walk On'. Kirk Franklin's choir accompanies the band from in front of the main stage. U2 is nominated eight times in seven categories. They win four awards, including the coveted Record Of The Year award for 'Walk On'.

Bono and Edge perform three songs at the MusiCares Person of the Year tribute honoring Bono. Their set begins with a cover of Sinatra's 'That's Life', and is followed by Cole Porter's 'Night and Day.' They conclude with an acoustic version of 'The Hands That Built America.' The performance wraps up a concert which saw artists such as Elvis Costello, Garbage, No Doubt, Sheryl Crow and others performing covers of U2 songs.

U2 performs a shortened version of 'The Hands That Built America' - Bono changes the lyrics to 'Late in the spring, yellow cloud on a desert skyline, Some father's son... is it his or is it mine?' instead of the usual 'There's a cloud...' portion. The entire band performs although there is some taped backing music as well. Larry finishes the song and does a very short drum bit from 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' at the end of the song.

One, Pride (In The Name Of Love)

U2 performs two songs at the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Summer Games at Croke Park in Dublin. 'One' includes backing from a full orchestra. In 'Pride,' Bono changes lyrics to reference the day's events and brings out former South African president Nelson Mandela, calling him 'the president of everywhere and everyone who loves and fights for freedom.'

Bono and the Edge perform at the 46664 concert in South Africa. They appear early in the show to perform American Prayer with Beyonce and David Stewart, and 46664 with David Stewart and others. They return to the stage late in the show to perform One which finishes with Unchained Melody. Anastasia, Queen, David Stewart, and Beyonce then join them on stage for Amandla.
